In Swahili, ‘rafiki’ means friend and the film depicts the romance between two young women in Nairobi, where homosexuality is illegal (driven primarily by the opposition from the church and the film was actually banned by the Kenyan government). Kena (Samantha Mugatsia) and Ziki (Shelia Munyiva) are the daughters of opposing politicians who meet when their fathers are campaigning in a local election. As their relationship deepens, the stakes become higher and they are forced to choose between openness and secrecy, happiness and safety.
