One Planet Bruton Walk: Tree seed collecting and sowing
October 9, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pmFree
A shortish walk around Bruton on Saturday morning (9 October 2021) starting at the Stepping Stones at 10am and ending in Tolbury to sow the seeds that we find, to grow into free saplings for Bruton in the future. We should finish by noon.
Please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you plan to join us as numbers are limited.
It was originally intended to be a tree seed collecting walk but after a mast* year for oak last year there are very few acorns around. Squirrels seem to have got to all the hazels and, while it seems to be a mast year for beech, all the beechnuts that I’ve picked up are empty because pigeons and squirrels have been at them first. So we’ll focus on collecting hawthorn and other berries to sow. We’ll also do some tree ID along the way.
* Mast is the botanical name for the nuts, seeds, buds, or fruits of trees and shrubs that are eaten by wildlife. A mast year is one where a tree produces a bumper crop of its fruit. This Woodland Trust article explains more about it.
If you’re not able to join us but are interested in finding out more about growing trees from seed, the Tree Council has lots of useful resources. My bible for growing trees from seed is TCV’s Seed Harvest Handbook. The Wildlife Trusts’ Wildlife Watch has lots of activities for children.
