Film Screening: ‘Call Her Applebroog’
March 11 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pmFree
To celebrate Ida Applebroog’s solo exhibition ‘Right Up To Now 1969 – 2021’, we are thrilled to present a screening of ‘Call Her Applebroog’ (2016) directed by filmmaker, and the artist’s daughter, Beth B. This deeply personal portrait of acclaimed New York–based artist Ida Applebroog was shot with mischievous reverence by Beth B. Born in the Bronx to Orthodox Jewish émigrés from Poland, Applebroog looks back at how she expressed herself through decades of drawings and paintings, as well as her private journals. With her daughter’s encouragement, she investigates the stranger that is her former self, a woman who found psychological and sexual liberation through art. As Beth B finds a deeper understanding of her mother as a human being, Applebroog shares a newfound appreciation for her own provocative work. Welcome drink at 7 pm, with the screening starting promptly at 7.20 pm and finishing by 8.30 pm. Please note, the screening is not taking place at the gallery and instead is a short walk away at King’s Bruton. Tickets are free however we encourage attendees to donate to our 2022 local charities if possible, these are: Bruton Museum, Somerset Wildlife Trust and STAR (Somerset Trust for Arts & Recreation). ‘Ida Applebroog. Right Up To Now 1969 – 2021’ consists of highlights travelling from the artist’s largest survey to date at Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid, alongside important new works created over the past year. Now in her 90s, the comprehensive survey speaks to Applebroog’s radical introspection as a woman and an artist, presenting life as it is and the repetitive patterns of our existence. The exhibition is on view at Hauser & Wirth Somerset from 29 January – 2 May 2022. For news on future events and forthcoming gallery exhibitions, sign up to our mailing list here.
