Batcombe Film Society presents ‘The Father’ 92020) directed by Florian Zeller, with Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman
February 18 @ 7:15 pm - 10:00 pm
A wrenching performance from Anthony Hopkins in the title role depicting a father with dementia who fervently believes that his daughter is trying to steal his flat.
In this, his directorial debut, Florian Zeller is reinterpreting his original stage play. The central theme does not just explore the way we treat our elderly, it also examines how we deal with confusion. When we first see the daughter she is played by Olivia Colman, then we meet her again, this time played by Olivia Williams.
Zeller explains that he has deliberately made a puzzle with several pieces missing. Perhaps rather like our real world. The Guardian wrote:
““Cinema is a place for questions, not answers,” says Zeller. “Anthony’s daughter is in a painful situation. She’s trying her best but she understands that love isn’t enough. It must be so hard becoming the parent of your own parent, or to leave them in an institution. The film is not about telling people what they should do. There is a consolation, a very real and beautiful one, in remembering that we are all in the same boat. Art reminds us we are not just individuals. We are part of something larger.””
