On March 19 2021, a volcano erupted in Iceland at Geldingadlir, where none had appeared for 800 years.
In locked-down Somerset, the photographer and writer Max Milligan leapt out of bed, plotting a stealth return to the land of ice and fire. He envisaged his dream shot: the elusive aurora borealis flickering behind the lava spout in the night sky. Five weeks later he was the only photographer to record those incredible combined phenomenon.
Guy Kennaway is a writer of memoir and comic novels. Best known for Bird Brain, a story about an optimistic pheasant facing the shooting season, and One People about a Jamaican village about to be engulfed by mass tourism, he has also written about killing his aged mum (with her consent) in TIME TO GO, and a walk he made across Britain with his black muslim son-in-law in FOOT NOTES.
